Best in Season - Leeks

It’s always great to eat fruit and vegetables which are in season, they are generally cheaper and at their peak for flavour. 

Try leeks for a tasty veg that’s in season right now.  Perfect for adding to mash (pan fry with a little butter until turning golden), add to pies, stir fry, casseroles and stews for a delicate flavour boost and a hint of green and white colour.

The nutritional stuff

From the allium family, alongside onions and garlic, this veg offers a milder flavour and scent than it’s cousins and is definitely less eye watering to prepare than the good old onion!   Alongside their great flavour leeks are packed full of vitamins, minerals and those all important anti-oxidants to help boost your immune system.  They are a great source of vitamin K,  a very good source of manganese, vitamin B6, copper, iron, folate, and vitamin C. and a good source of vitamin A (carotenoids, dietary fiber, magnesium, vitamin E, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids). Leeks are very good for you!  

What to look for and avoid

Choosing leeks is really easy, look for long white stems where possible, not too small in size, and quite crisp and firm (avoid limp leeks!) Leek roots are often trimmed before sale, but look for leeks with some roots still at the base if possible, avoid leeks with yellowed, browned or crispy dying leaves. Leeks do tend to dry out quickly so it’s best to prepare them just before you need them.
